I had a pacemaker inserted on 10/28/11, and have resumed fairly heavy-duty doubles tennis play.
I was playing the net and someone hit a very hard ball that struck about an inch below the PM. I wonder whether any of you have any thoughts on whether the PM could be damaged were a hard-hit ball to hit it. Also, should I be wearing some protective padding? A female friend jokingly suggested a padded bra.

PM Struck by Tennis Ball

My fear about being struck also relates to the wires coming out of the PM.
What are your views on a hit dislodging a wire.
I guess I worry too much.

Wires

Pretty unlikely. The wires are screwed into recessed terminals and are very secure. It would take a very accurate hit with something like a golf ball to actually break a lead.
As TraceyE mentioned there are pads that will protect the pacer and wires. They should work well with tennis balls.

Tennis & Pickleball

Hello tennisguy,
I too was a tennis guy, for many years--going back to high school. With all its sudden stops, tennis grew to be hard on my ankles, so now, in my retirement, I've switched to pickleball, which I play with my neighbors here in San Diego County. Ever play pickleball? Try it; you'll probably like it. Pickleball uses a hard plastic wiffle-ball-type ball; so far, I have not been hit in the chest with it, so my 6-year-old pacemaker seems still in tact. Best, Pickleball

Thank you all for othe nice comments. I found that paceguard.com sells special shirts (including insertable pads) that would be of help. They cost $45, and should wear pretty well.

Pickleball

I tried pickleball, but it doesn't work for me. (We have four pickleball courts in my community.) The trouble is that I change my grip at the net, something one cannot get away with in pickleball.
BTW, we are visiting SD for a vacation starting 8/19. I'm looking forward to the many attractions there.

Pickleball / San Diego

Don't forget, when you are in San Diego, to go to Balboa Park. Large, very pleasant site, with everything from museums, to ping pong and badminton, to plenty of walking. Try to avoid getting hit with any tennis balls. Off to my cardiologist tomorrow; will discuss with him the recent decline in PVC's and the Triclosan issue. John S. (Pickleball)

So, my advice is to go about your daily routine and forget that you have a pacemaker implanted in your body.

You might end up with a big bruise, but you're not going to damage titanium. They do make shirts with padding over the pm for full contact sports but I suspect it would be clunky for tennis.
