Hi, its me again, I had posted about weight gain. I do believe the weight gain is due to water retention. I have gained 10 pounds in 3 months and I now am seeing at least a one half to 1 inch indentation where my sock elastic is. I cannot remove my rings.. My GP said to wear compression stockings!!! Like thats going to help with my hands and abdomen is also expanding, I have noticed more of a problem with constipation, but this water retention scares me. I've afraid of heart failure, I have never had water retention until the pacemaker was inserted, has anyones else had this problem. Going to see my NEW cardiologist on Wednesday, my initial doc bailed on me 3 weeks after surgery and left for a teaching position. My blood pressure is also going up.

Hope

Hope is the key to knowing you got something there other than nothing.
I had gained ten pounds a month ....in four months it was fourty pounds...I walked to work, exercised and diet. To no avail did anything worked. After getting a thyroid test that was (quote: Normal) was not normal . The Dr there asked if I had a teenager at home or kids. I said yes. He dx it has nerves! Gave me a nerve pill that I could not work and take at the same time.
I finially went to my childhood Dr. I told him what the number was on my test. He looked at me and said you have Hypothroidism just like your G'ma and your Mom...You need meds. You didn't mention losing tons of hair, sleeping extremely amounts or seizures or not thinking straight. The thyroid regulates so much in your body.
If you are swelling I have found I have sat too much or done too much. There is a balance act there with this. Lower salt intake helps. At 22 I was told to eat no baccon, salty foods, rinse all vegs from can goods. I would gain up to 10pounds in a day, then go to the bathroom and live in it the next dumping the water wt.
Unexplained wt gain does need to be addressed by your Primary Doctor or heart doctor. Make a list of your activities/food intake and see where there maybe a cause. I found that doing that helps the doctor dx you better and it has opened my eyes to the whys. I hope this helped. Don't give up tho....it's your body and you know what isn't right. Ask the questions to your doctor...and show him what you are doing about it. It will help both of you. I wish you the best...keep us updated ok? Hugs...Lori

What I meant about Hope is knowing that hope to solve an issue. I did not explain that right. My bad. Lori

I agree. See your dr soon. I was rushed to the hospital with flash pulmonary edema a couple of years ago. I had been cutting back on the furosimide (diuretic) and gradually filled up with fluid to the point of which I nearly needed to intebated. My fluid was carried in my upper body not in my lower extremities so it never alerted my drs. Now I know that a change in weight and puffiness means I need to take an extra diuretic. Are you having difficulty breathing upon exertion? Take care and hope all is well.
BP going up...
by donr - 2012-02-21 10:02:00
...has anyone mentioned a diuretic? You did not. Any cardio worth his/her salt (yes, a pun) would have you on one faster than a jackrabbit on a date (Recognize that ). If it's water retention of a non-serious nature that will take care of it. BTW: Water retention can cause SOB problems. The sac around the heart collects the stuff & makes it harder for the heart to beat, resulting in SOB.
Does your cardio routinely & casually ever just put their hand on your ankle & gently squeezed it? I accuse mine (Openly when he does it) of having a foot & ankle fettish. That's checking you for water retention. My Primary care doc used to do that, also. If that gentle feel noted anything, it becomes a finger pushed into the bloat, followed by a visual to see if there is any indentation left over.
Under any case, you need to see a Dr. That kind of wt. gain, followed by your other symptoms requires attention.
Don
Medications?
by Sue H. - 2012-02-21 10:02:56
Are you taking any medications since the pacer insert?
Some heart medications cause weight gain and constipation. If you are on any, an adjustment of dose can sometimes solve the problem. I'm on BP meds and every day my feet and lower legs would look so puffy. Dr lowered dose voila no more puffy feet. Weight gain is still a problem as many drugs slow your metabolism. Yuck just what we need....so we who want to lose weight have to work twice as hard.....
Watch your salt intake too....keep it real low.
Good luck with new doctor and let us know how you make out.

water retention

Well I went to see my new cardiologist today and we both dislike each other!!! He wondered why I was coming to see him and not an electro doc, I was fuming, told him his receptionist said I was to him and not the electro doc when I called and inquired about it 2 months ago. I also hate it when these docs talk to you like you have an IQ of 85 or think u are 85. Anyway he asks if I have any fluid retention after he already had asked why I was there,.. strike 2... showed him the marks on my legs and said I cannot remove my rings. He said.....thats probably only 10 pounds of water and that is not enough to worry about and that I was just being vain. I asked him if he would like 10 extra pounds and he said no. The he asked about other symptoms and I told him about the uncomfotable feeling in my heart. I was then asked about the pain scale of 1 - 10 I told him it wasnt pain it was uncomfortable and usually resulted in a headache. Again I was asked about the scale of pain, I said ok say 6, and he says so six is pretty painful... About now I'm just ready to leave, I asked why am I having all this happen after my PM and he said I cant blame the pacemaker for this and I wanted to know how he could say that since it happened after the PM, I gave him a list of meds I am currently taking when I arrived and he told me my heart meds could cause the problem, I said REALLY, what would those be? I'm not on any. So then he suggests a stress test, echo and blood work, So I asked how the stress test would work with the pacemaker and he got madder and said if I had any problems it would kick in and pace me. By now I'm almost in tears from anger and said I'm paced 100 percent of the time, why didnt you read this chart before u came in here..
So bottom line ... a stress test, ) which I think is a waster of time and money a nuclear one that is, and an echo which I can understand, and the blood work, but he want me to see an the electro doc I wanted to see in the first place. and they want me to see both, that is too over the top for me. I cant really afford all this and 2 docs, I'm not even done paying my portion of the hospital bill as yet and now all these tests when my deductible starts over. YIKES.
I'm really tired of these docs who clearly are 2nd rate and just want to rake over the Boomers, really disgusted. then he said well maybe the other doc can explain why you are having all these problems!! JERK!!!
First things first.....

You mentioned that you gave the dr a list of meds you are on but then said to him you're not on any??
I feel bad for you at the way he treated you but move on....
Before you have anymore tests, make an appointment with the EP. Bring the list of questions you have. He may decide you don't need the tests.
Best of luck to you.....

Pace maker and water retention
by Daver - 2018-03-27 18:17:30
I had a pace maker put in about a month ago. Having problem with water retention. I am now on low salt diet and Lasix 3 days per week.
here are my questions:
1. Is this water retention will get better with time .?
2. Has there a physical therapy or other method that will help with water retention instead of medication?
3. Taking potassium tablet is very harsh on stomach. Anyone had better luck with capsule that comes in 10 meq?
Please help if you can. Thanks

Yesterday I moved to a new place in my mind and realized how bad I felt 'before' and the difference my pacemaker has made.

thanks for the comments, but my socks are not new or too small. It dies dent in and stay that way for a bit. I work in a very large building and have a physical job, I probably walk 2 or more miles just at work, I try to walk 3 nites a week at home and I use the total gym 3 times a week. So I'm no couch potato, I was 140 now I'm 153, 3 more pounds since Saturday, I'm 56 years old with a dual lead PM Ive also have A fib. But that is nothing new. Just this swelling since the PM was put in. I can only go up 3 flight s of steps and I get winded and sometimes I feel like pressure on my chest. So I dont know,
