Women are different to men !

For some time I've noticed that women are different to men - you have a look next time you are in a shopping mall or a hospital or on a plane.

I've spotted that women are a different shape, they get more emotional and tend to be more bossy than men.

..but, it seems that there are other differences :-

A new study has shown that exercise affects womens' heart rates differently to those of men . The director of stress testing at the Mayo Clinic reviewed 25,000 stress tests and saw a significant difference between the sexes.

Because of these differences they have come up with a new formula :-

The maximum heart rate for women aged 40 to 89 should be 200 minus 67 % of their age; for men it should be 216 minus 93% of their age.

The study found that although peak heart rate declines with age for both sexes, the rate declines more gradually in women. This difference results in an overestimated peak heart rate in younger women and underestimated peak heart rate in older women.

All to do with hormones apparently ! Don't you think hormones have a lot to answer for !

Cheers

Ian

AGE vs Peak Heart Rate

by Mywingman - 2014-03-29 01:03:19

Got the info. Thank you. Did the math. Now I know what my peak heart rate could be.

Hmmm...

I did the math for both male and female based on someone 60 years of age and I come up with basically the same max heart rate.....160ish for both.

So as long as you know 1 formula, it seems it will work for both.

Very interesting

Good research Ian.

Thanks for this tidbit.

Take care,

Not quite Grateful Heart !

It depends on what age you choose. If you had chosen the age of 40 for example, then the maximum HR for women would be 173 for women and 179 for men

At age 80 , it would be 146 for women and 141 for men

Not great differences, but significant nevertheless.

I find it interesting that these recommendations for allowable maximum heart rates are gradually getting higher . There have been several posters on here who suffered under the old 200 minus your age formula for both sexes and had enormous battles to get their PMs adjusted to higher maximum settings ( especially very fit people )

Also Interesting

At age 40, the max HR guideline for men is a little greater and at age 80, the max HR guideline for women becomes greater.

Heart Attack symptoms

by Ck - 2014-03-29 06:03:35

Are different for men and women also (although I had every classic male symptom and still refused to believe I was having a heart attack....).

Thanks for sharing!

I belong to WomenHeart, the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. Educating the public about the differences of heart disease between men and women is one of our main goals.

You are right Dizzy

It seems that in many areas of medicine there are no attempts to differentiate between the sexes especially where the responses to drugs are concerned.

Statins and cholesterol are a very good example. If you are a woman , statins do not seem to increase life expectancy by a single day; the data is different for men.

Also there is evidence that high cholesterol levels are far less significant for women than men.

Most doctors ignore these findings and mass-medicate both sexes with statins.

Bossier ?

by Bostonstrong - 2014-03-30 10:03:30

We are bossier than men? Ian! I think you should go rub Mrs Ian's feet. Right now. Then bring her tea and chocolate on a silver tray. With freshly cut flowers. Then ask her from a safe distance if she agrees with you on the bossiness. I'll be waiting to hear.
Best regards
