blood too think

I'm new with my PM. I've had 2 coumiden checks, 1 was 1.2 today was 1.5. They are slowly increasing my med (warfirin). What happens if I don't get it to where it should be? How soon do I need to get it to the right numbers? Thanks, Tues. will be the 2nd wk from surgery.

Taking Blood Thinner

Warfarin levels should be 2.? to 2.9 as I recall when they had me on it a couple of years ago after getting a stent. Your best bet is to call the doctor or nurse and ask what is wanted for you. So far as I know if you don't get up to the recommend range it is just as not as effective as it needs to be. Again ask your doctor these questions because we are all different and you may need different numbers from what I did.

It's all abt vitamin K

When I first started on warfarin, I asked to have an apt with a dietician so that I could learn all about foods that contained large amounts of vitamin K. Once I had the list, it was so easy to keep track of my intake. As a general rule dark leafy greens have an abundance of vit K. The rule that worked for me was to keep a steady level of vit K in my diet. By doing so, I could eat my salads, broccoli and spinach but not all three at once. I successfully kept my INR between 2.5 and 3 for 6 years. I am now on Pradaxa and do not have to worry about vit K. Send me a private message with your email and I will send you my list

Take care. Your INR is creeping up so you are doing something right

Blood Levels

When I was on it last year it took at least a month to raise mine. I believe at one time I was taking 10mg of Warfarin. I never did get very high and was always jumping around, but they determined after three months that my blood clot was cleared and I went off it.

Also a lot of info on the internet on

foods & Vitamin K. Also be aware that many over the counter drugs (Tylenol, Fish Oil & COQ 10) can raise the INR. I had the opposite problem as I was well over 5 or 6 (been a few yrs now) so had to get int down to 2-3 range. For most of us it is a learning curve but usually once you get on a routine it is easier.

Let us know how it goes,

Sometimes a device must be tuned a few times before it is right. My cardiologist said it is like fine tuning a car.
