running until heart stoped

Hi i am 29 yrs old and not until March 23 of last year did i have a pacer put in. I ran High School and College Track & Cross Country. On March 23 of 2010 i was running in a treadmill at a local Bally's and i fainted and hit myself in the head and was taken to a hospital where they told me i need a pacer since my heart beat was less than 20 beats per min. I had an external pacer at first then i got the surgery. I have gained about 18-20 pounds since then. I am 5' 9 and i weight 182. I have been doing some swimming but nothing. My question is: Can i go back to my natural sport of running? I need to lose weight and i feel i need to go back to running!? I plan to run 30-45 min 3-4 times a week. I want to lose weight but i don't want to hurt the pacers batt life or even worse faint again and possibly die.

thanks in advance!

I completely understand about wanting to get back in the gym. I was kind of the opposite of you, I had gained about 20 pounds before my PM was put in. I started working out at the gym and running outside, still no weight loss. Since I had my PM put in 2 weeks ago, I have been back at the gym every day. Keeping my heartrate under 150 (that's what my high it set at currently) only doing elliptical, treadmill, and stairmill. Also I downloaded an app called Myfitnesspal (free app). You can track your calorie intake and burn daily. In 2 weeks, I've lost 4 pounds already. I can't wait to get released and get my heartrate higher and start lifting. You will get there, just takes time and patience. A good friend of mine,a body builder, said weightloss is 90% diet and 10 % exercise. good luck!

Walking

Your question should be answered by your doctor. Only the doctor can give that answer. Your doctor knows your history.

Myself, I had my CRT-D implant done April of this year. I had put on an extra 15 lbs. I started walking and now I'm at a very fast pace and I lost 10 of those extra lbs. I'm still working on loosing another 5-8 lbs. I'm unable to run due to a bad knee.

Thx gail

Running With PM

by SMITTY - 2011-07-26 09:07:50

As Fish Fighter said yours is one of those questions that is best answered by your Dr just to be sure no other problem, heart wise of otherwise, has jumped up. As for as your pacemaker, if everything else is good to go, it should make your running safer, easier and more enjoyable.

Good luck,

Smitty

Hello, apologies in advance for any bad spelling-using an I phone is not that good when typing a mail!! I guess I relate to you 100pc as I too was an active sports person boxing at a elite amateur level, running daily and generally being regarded as a training maniac!! And hey presto, I have went from all of that to pretty much nothing. It all started when I suffered cheat pain, shortness of breath etc after a training session, resulting in an ICD!! I had my first one fitted 21/5 but had to have a revision (re-positioned due to loose leads...) now mine was sub-pectoral which in theory hides the little fella pretty well but came with a huge amount of pain. My second op was two weeks ago but after spending the night on hospital I was in huge amounts of pain, having to return to hospital for a another three days to be put on a morphine drip etc.....
I too have put on some weight, maybe 10 "lbs but it's so frustrating - I have just re adjusted my diet and eliminated all junk food!! I am keeping a food diary which can keep me on track. I too plan on swapping the boxing gloves for a new road bike and participating on TRiathlons - that's te plan! The doctors havesaid it's a crystal ball for me. - in there eyes I spent 5 weeks in hospital unable to walk 5 yards so anymore than that will be seen as a bonus!! Yeah yeah!!...... I will Rin again if it kills me!! The plan is to start with short 5k runs, flat terrain and o hope to do these three times a week... It's funny really as some cardiologists have said "no way" others have said "do what uou feel" so I thibk you will just news to see how it goes. O would be keen to hear what your thinking though. I will also be doing some light cycling, building up to some more strenous rides... Again that's the plan! I don't think I will ever run a 3.15 marathon again buy you know what.... Who knows!!

Running okay

Again, your doctor needs to be asked the question. But its likely to be your condition that might preclude exercise. The pacemaker should handle it fine. I had mine fitted 2009 and run regularly. 5-6 times a week around 6 miles each time. I can't run as fast as I used to, but it keeps the weight in check, and I still race. Except when I drop the exercise it does creep up.
Good luck.
Gail
P.S. I know a runner who does 2.20 marathons. He is mid 30s and has had a pace maker since his late 20s.

Soccer referee

by Msosa54 - 2011-07-28 01:07:45

I had my PM last december 2010. I'm 61 and still officiating soccer games. I also gain some weight after my PM was set. I went back to the gym one month after and since then I have been running 3 days a week doing 15 miles a week and doing games on Sundays with no problems at all. It is possible that at the beginning you won't feel comfortable or maybe you will be out of breath in few minutes, in that case you will need to go back to your doctor and ask him to change the PM set up.

WOW

I have ran two times this week and well since i am a runner all my life i was able to stay on a normal slow pace. I think the more i work out the better. I still need to talk to my doctor. Thanks for all the feed back. You give me hope.... fishfighter, Smitty, gulliver80, gailie and Msosa54.
