Photophobia (sensitive to light)

Hi guys,

I have had my pacemaker for about 5 months. Its doing great, heart rate is 60 with 120 max and I’m 31 years old. In the last 3 months I have had 4 times where I get a little cloudy vision and can’t see well (like you have been staring at a light). It wears off after 30 mins or so and doesn’t hurt, etc.

After some research, I found this is a symptom of migraines called photophobia. I noticed that I’ve only got this issue since my PM so I googled photophobia and pacermaker and presto, a few books have been written about them being linked.....GREAT ! not.

Has anyone else had this annoying problem?  Gonna see the doc this week.

Photophobia Caused By Pacemakers

by J.B. - 2011-12-20 03:12:25

Damn pacemakers. If it wasn't for the fact that they keep some people alive, the implanting of one should be prohibited. Do any of the books mention how those with a pacemaker prevent having photophobia?

vision

Hello Lee, I have experienced some vision issues since getting my pacemaker (nov 2010) Just a couple times though. It isn't real cloudy but it's like a see an image or a wavy thin line, like a piece of thin thread that is silver in color...not sure what the heck it is or how to explain it entirely. It lasts about 30 -45 minutes. Well anyways hope this helps.

Amiodarone can cause photophobia

Do you take amiodarone? Photophobia is a possible side effect of that medication (and maybe other drugs, too).

Coincidence?

by Sue H. - 2011-12-21 10:12:18

From what I've been told by my eye doctor the "visions" you describe are painless migraines. She also said, as pacemaker writer mentions, that many of the drugs, e.g. high blood pressure meds, rhythm drugs, etc....cause vision issues e.g. with some of the symptoms described. When I go from a dark area to a sunlit area, I get a flurry of spark like things in a circle in my eyes but only for a minute. Again, probably the meds I'm on. I think the only connection with a pacemaker is the fact most people are also put on drugs at the same time for other heart issues and if any symptoms come up, we blame the pacer right away.....just a coincidence maybe?

migraine auras

by kathykat11 - 2011-12-21 11:12:16

What you guys are describing is the kind of auras that precede my migraines. I am 59 years old and have been h ving them since before I started school. A couple of my heart meds have the nice affect of helping with the migraine pain, both nadolol an propranolol help with the pain and nausea. Unfortunately, It does not help with the bad case of dull and stupid that always accompanies my migraines. I am so glad I was at home to find out how dumb I am with this because without the pain to warn me I could get myself in a world of trouble. Anyone not smart enough anymore to know that an extension cord has both a male and female end to it is too dumb to deal with the world. I am on guard now not to attempt anything new or difficult after I get an aura. My direct boss at work doesn't get migraines but her husband does so she doesn't give me work that is crucial to the running of he business anyday I am "off".

Castellations

by donr - 2011-12-21 12:12:58

That’s what an optometrist called what I have, they sound like what Sarge described - thin, silvery lines, forming curved figures like the castellations atop turrets of old castles.

They last about 30 - 45 min & affect my ability to focus my eyes. Don’t have migraines, but have been told that these go w/migraines.

AhHa I may be seeing the light

I am having an awful time. I have some sort of dizzy feeling, like I am going to pass out. Having the CRT-D implanted helped, but I still feel like I am about to pass out frequently. I really do not want to visit the Neuro. M.D. for many reasons.

I have been having my vision in my left eye just go beige. It has happened five times in 6 months. I had migraines, up until my heart stopped. I have been on Cardiac Meds. since that time, evidently sometimes they stop the migraines. Mine stopped. Now, I have the dizzy stuff and the left eye just seeing beige. I wonder if it is a painless migraine. I know they exist, my M.D. warned me about them. He father had one and they thought he was having a stroke, but it was just a migraine.

Maybe I am just having a migraine, nothing else is going to happen. I guess I will have to brave up and see the Neuro. guy.

I am so pleased to hear of someone else with sort of the same thing.
