new patient

I am having a dual chamber pacemaker put in on June 20th and am very nervous and scared. I have a fast and irregular heart beat. They are also doing an ablation with the pacemaker too.

Can anyone tell me what it is like, what will happen afterwards, what type of a floor I will go to. What it was like for them. Anything will help. Please.

Depending on a lot of things it can be very simple or not. the pacemaker implant itself is generally an outpatient procedure. With an ablation they may want to keep you overnight to see how your heart reacts to it.

The bottom line is to ask your cardiologist these questions. He/she is the one who will be doing the procedures and has his approach to post op care.

One suggestion that many have found helpful after the surgery. For the first few nights sleep on the side opposite the pacemaker and put a pillow in front of you to support the upper arm. This keeps from squeezing the pacemaker site and is a major help in avoiding pain. It was so effective for me that I slept through the first night without pain meds.

Be sure and come back here for any questions you have, and let us know how it went for you.

best wishes.

Nothing to worry. its a minor surgery and mine took 45 mnts only. of course you will have some pain in the first few days but things will go well so fast.

all the best

I had a mini-maze in 05 and an ablation in 06 to correct permanent afib that I had for 10 years. This was followed by an PM in 07. My health and life are so much better. Go for it.
