pain and recovery

I just had my surgery on May 6th. Since I am left-handed my pacemaker was put on the right side. The back of my shoulder hurts and arm hurt. It’s like it is really sore and it really hurts to move my arm.

Are these normal symptoms?

New PM & Pain

Hello Precious,

Pain with a new pacemaker for a week or so is not uncommon. I was back to my normal activity with 10 days with both of mine. That is normal activity except full use of the arm and I took it easy with that for about 6 weeks. However, if you are having severe pain it is not early to call the Dr.

Good luck,

Smitty

your body will have taken a bit of a battering, i was awake and could feel the pushing and shoving even though there was no pain. Nerves will have been temporarily damaged, it will get better!

Especially if you were out or heavily sedated during the surgery they may have put you in a position that stressed your shoulder. Most of us have positions for arms, necks, backs, etc that we avoid. By the time we get to my age at 80 it seems like our whole body qualifies.

Anyhow, this is often the cause of post implant pain. So for now just treat it like you would a pulled muscle and give it a few days. There is a cream called Triflora I get from the health food store that I have found very effective for this sort of pain. I don't use it because it is a natural remedy. It just works. There are a bunch of other ones out there as well that folks here have found effective as well.

Be sure and keep the arm gently active so it doesn't become stiff.

Back and shoulder pain

I was very concerned about the amount of back and shoulder pain I was experiencing after implantation. The body goes through a lot during surgery, and needs a lot of time to adapt to the changes made to your veins and tissue. The pain eventually went away (I am 2 months post surgery). My arm was also sore, and I was told to take 1 aspirin/day for the first 2 months to help with blood flow.
I hope you're feeling better soon!

Do the doctors give you a prescription for pain meds post op? And what about the follow up? If you are still hurting, do they just suggest you take an asprin or do they try to get u some meds for real comfort?
