Hi everyone,,, I was recently in a Vegas casino when I felt like my chest was pounding and I got nauseated and tingly on my left side. Felt bad for two days with extreme exhaustion. Was there for 4 days but only carried a large purse that had a magnetic closure on the last day which is when I had the above symptoms. Didn't think about the purse until I got home and realized that as a left handed person I was holding it up on my left shoulder which would have made the magnet extremely close to my pacemaker. Needless to say that purse is being given away!!! Just wandered if anyone else had this happen to them and just how small of a magnet will interfere with my PM. Thanks for all the helpful information that is on this site. BTW I had my PM put in 2/14/11 don't know if that make any difference just thought I would add!

Magnets

One day I was at an arts and crafts fair and I went into a vendor's area who sold refridgerator magnets. I guess since there were so many (100's) of them in one little area, it gave me that sensation that you get when they interrogate your pm, so I had to step out of there quickly.

Thanks for your reply Don. I checked out the magnet strength by holding different objects next to it and it does apprear to be a pretty stong magnet so yes the purse is going today!!
Purses

So I got rid of the "magnetic" purse and started using another one that I already had just to realize that the clasps on it are magnets too... the plus side is that I have carried this one before since I have had my PM and apparently the magnets in the closures are small enough that they never messed with me. Elle read around this site because there are quite a few things I have learned that have magnetic force in them that I never would have thought.... Love that I can find my answers here and not have to call the Dr.everytime I have a ?? and have him think I am a lunatic...haha

Betty: That is exactly what they think of us when we have questions. They forget that each of us starts out uninformed because we've never been there before. They have & know SOME of the answers (NOTE: I didn't give them credit for knowing ALL of the answers!). MOF, I'll betcha that all us great unwashed out here in PM Host land collectively know more answers than the medics do!
Since you are a woman, I can see/hear the internal conversation in the cardio's office now, after you hang up (This is Shirley & LaVerne talking):
"Who was THAT?"
"Oh, just another hysterical woman asking another stupid question about magnets on her purse"
"Isn't it amazing how dumb patients are these days? It seems like the longer we work here, the dumber they get!"
"You know, now that you mention it, you are right. I've been sitting at this desk for 5 yrs, now, & they aren't getting any smarter; not only that, but they are getting more & more hysterical about how they feel the first time something weird happens to them, nearly passing out while crossing the street in front of a speeding city bus - & they demand to know what is happening. UGH, when will they ever learn?"
"Yeah, if they read that neat little manual that we give them when they get their PM, they'd know EVERYTHING! & they wouldn't have to bother us while we are getting a cup of coffee."
Cheers.

Thank you for posting this. I would have NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT!!! I too carry my purse on my left shoulder. I am going to have my implant on May 8th. So this is good to know. I'm glad my favorite purse has a zipper. :~)
Thanks

Magnetic Purse

Betty - doesn't matter the SIZE of the magnet. What matters is the STRENGTH!
I've seen super magnets on my wife's purses that were pretty strong.
Have you given the purse away yet? If not, grab it & see if the magnet is really strong. If so, there is a FAIR chance that it is the culprit. Considering that you were probably cutching it pretty cose to your PM for safety from purse snatchers/pickpockets.
When you had your Pm panted would make no difference.
I had my PM affected in an electric field once & it made me feel pretty punk for a while - but that was probably because I did not know what was happening to me.
If you like the purse, don't get rid of it -just keepit away from your PM.
