What is your opinion on taking fish oil in place of aspirin as a blood thinner?

SUPPLEMENTS

As mentioned in a prior post there is a book called" A-Z Guide to Drug-Herb-Vitamin Interactions" edited by Alan R. Gaby, M.D.
This book references and cross references nearly all drugs/herbs/vitamins which were in use as of writing date of issue.
Ie: policosanol: no well-known drug interactions as of this writing
ie: fish oil and cod liver oil (EPA and DHA:
cyclosporine:,
Should AVOID the following: chinese scullcap and st. johns wort, red winw, milk, apple juice and orange juice., ginko biloba, quercitin, vitamin "E",
Because this drug can cause retention of potassisum it is recommended that persons not consume potassium supplements or high potassium foods .
This drug has been associated with low blood magneassium levels.
This was a random pick!
Supplements are fine! Just know what you choose! There are a few companies that are third party checked and are great products. Just remember if you pay $3.00 for something you will likely get $2.00 worth!

fish oil

Depends on issues. Normally fish oil in dosages of less than 3 grams causes little to no issues. HOWEVER, depending on what meds you are on and what your doctor tells you COULD make a difference! Yes, fish oil IS a natural blood thinner! Like asparin, warfin, coumadan, plavix and others out there it thins the blood, helps break down plaque but it also has other benefits. It supplies the fatty acid OMEGA 3 which we can only get from fish and nuts! It is great for women in menapause and also for minor aches and pains. It's sort of like C0Q10, after the majic age of around 50 our bodys do not mfg what we need so we have to supplement for it.
If you are a diabetic I would not even consider taking it because of its "FAT" content and that does not fit well with trying to bring down/control sugars! It does, however, do wonders with cholestrol/tryglicerides. BUT, taking what most doctors recommend (1000 mg daily) does not do the job UNLESS your levels are already under control.
When I first started taking fish oils I took 8000mg daily until I got my levels where I wanted them and now I take 4000mg daily (does a great job). However, if yu are diabetic you should consider FLAX SEED/FLAX SEED OIL (been there, done that)!
I try to take only NATURAL stuff as opposed to prescription meds (drives my doctor nuts). However, because I have had some stents placed in the last year I am on PLAVIX and asperin daily (both are blood thinners but each does a different thing) and it is my plan to get off the PLAVIX in January. Because I am a "border line" diabetic my numbers will creep up (stupid eating, stress, etc) I get off the fish oil 2 to 3 weeks and do the same dosage of FLAX SEED oil.
Because I own/operte a health food store I have the luxery of different brands. Of all the stuff I have tried I find I benefit from BARLEANS (either fish oil or flax oil) best., no after taste, burping fish taste etc.
I will say this in closing. Be sure to pay CLOSE attention to the EPA and DHA contents of what you take and remember that the HIGHER the number the better it is. Just remember if you pay a LITTLE for the product you will get a LITTLE result!
If you want to discuss the other in more detail, etc you can private message me and we can continue on.
Good luck,
Cecil

Take Both

by ebfox - 2012-09-18 09:09:47

The short answer is that fish oil will not replace aspirin's thining capability, however there are other good reasons to take Omega 3's. Take both- if aspirin bothers your stomach, you can get coated aspirin.

neither

I used to take fish oil, dr didn't recommend it but was happy when I mentioned I was on it. I stopped when I realized my favorite after gym snack has more omega-3's than the supplement, plus is loaded with protein and fiber. I'd rather eat my muffin than swallow pills or gag on the oil!

a one minute muffin
1/4 c flax
1/4 tsp baking powder
2 tbls pumpkin, banana, or unsweetened apple butter
1 egg, or 2 egg whites
1 pack stevia, 1 tbls honey (optional)
mix in glass bowl or measuring cup, microwave 1 min or until done. I like to drizzle with honey since I don't make it with sweetener. I just finished one, today's was pumpkin and I tossed in some no sugar chocolate chips.

Ask your dr before taking daily aspirin.

Alternative blood thinner to asprin

Hi, The medication given me after my pacemaker was fitted really upset my system, so when I was discharged from hospital, instead of taking Plavix, I took (and still take 3 capsules daily) Pycnogenol, which is said to be one of the most potent natural scavenger of free radicals. I read that it mops-up aggressive radicals and also boosts the immune system, as well as strengthening blood vessel walls and capillaries. It helps you to have better circulation by preventing stress-induced constriction of arteries and blood clotting. The extract also contains substances that act against cramps. I also take 2 to 3 daily Policosanol caps from sugarcane, because it's said to lower cholesterol levels as well as the statin medications do. I stopped my asprin because it upset my tummy, and I can't take fish oil for the same reason, but I can take flaxseed oil (organic), but this stuff goes off very quickly and isn't safe to take then. I take lots of supplements, including 300mg Ubiquinol, as alternates to the drugs I was given, and I'm doing fine on them, much to my docs amusement. dillymar
