heart monitor chest strap and iphone 5

I want to get a heart rate monitor chest strap that inputs to an iphone 5. Anyone know or use one that works without interference from the pacemaker?

interference

The chest strap and phone will not interfere with the pm.However, the pm may interfere with the monitor and keep it from working properly. Some members use them (monitors in general, not specifically the one for the phone) with no problem. Others show rates too fast because it picks up the pm spike as well as the beats. Others, like me, get no reading whatsoever.

If you can, try it out in the store before buying. They don't usually like to do that, but after I returned two in a row, I started asking and have never been told no when I explained my reason. So far I have not found one that works for me! Apparently while there are quite a few out there, there are very few technologies in use. Most of the inexpensive ones are using older technologies by the companies that make the more expensive ones.

No reading on chest strap

Thanks electric frank - that could well be the problem with the wahoo chest strap. It transmission to the iPhone in Bluetooth and it may have a different process in reading the pulse on the input side.

I did orient the strap to different positions -to each side and on the back without success in getting output to the iPhone.

I have now identified 4 other straps that transmit to the iPhone. Will try them if I can find them locally over the next few weeks.

I tried it all! I spent a whole weekend playing with it, went through all their troubleshooting ideas, called polar. Then I went back to Sports Authority and tried every other brand they had. Then I went to a high end running store with an excellent manager, tried everything he had in stock while he got online and researched the technologies. That was several years ago, haven't tried recently. I'm on beta blockers now so racing higher than the pm can pace isn't an issue anymore. I go by how I feel and don't worry about it!

thanks for the comments

yeah, will go to the stores and see if i can find ones that send data to the iphone 5 with apps. that will probably b quicker than waiting for 4 suppliers to answer email questions.

good idea

i have the app for reading the pulse for individual readings, i also use a strap and watch made by sportline when cardio exercising on the ellipitical.

i want to transition to the iphone apps so i can see performance in each training zone at the same time instead of button pushing on the watch.

No reading on chest strap monitor

I just realized there is another issue that causes problems with the chest strap monitor besides the pacemaker pulse. If you look at the ECG of someone with bundle branch block the waves look very different in the various leads even without a pacemaker. I had LBBB before my complete block occurred. If the chest electrodes happen to be in an orientation where there is low or no signal the monitor declares you dead and shows no HR.

TraceyE: did you ever try reorienting the strap for a different electrode placement?

I dunno

Frank, I feel pretty good if I'm dead. I've always ignored zombie stories, maybe I need to pay more attention.

I'm betting you were a lot of fun in the classroom :)

I'm worried

Tracey, are you sure you have a heart beat? Maybe you are dead and don't know it.

Back when I taught electronics and I had a class half asleep during my reading of the required sylibus, I used to wake them up with the following:

"I do not tolerate any student dying during my lecture and failing to fall over. Any student found dead and still upright will be expelled".

There would be a pause then strange looks followed by smiles.

have a chest strap that works with pm and iphone5

I had to return the wahoo cheststrap. would not work with me and the pm. Know it worked with other folks.

I bought a polar h7 and it works like a champ. Provides readings to the iphone 5 by the polar beat app and also the digifit app along with working with wahoo app wahoo utility.. Digifit app has an advantage because it reports current heart rate along with average and maximum since starting. I will try to post a photo of the output

Neat part about the h7 chest strap is that is uses a blue tooth interface and reads the heart rate 33 feet away. I can leave the iphone on the tennis court bench and it picks up the heart rate during the entire play and provides a graph. pretty cool.
