Running a marathon

hello,

i am a 34 yr old woman who got my pacemaker 2 yrs ago next month. It took about a year to start feeling normal again and then i took up running. I ran 5ks,5mi. and 2 half marathons last summer. This summer i am going to run my first marathon to raise funds for the adoption of our daughter.

I was wondering if anyone has done this and if there were any problems. My docs are a little concerned about dehydration and the heat. I had a little set back last week because of dehydration.

In summer heat?

I don't know if I would run a marathon in the summer heat. I used to run in high school many years ago before my pacemaker. A marathon is a hard event. I ran the NYC marathon and that was tough in cool weather. You would have to be careful about getting dehydrated in the heat, even if you did not have a pacemaker.

If you decide to go for it, you may want to plan the types of fluids that you will drink, and how often you need to drink. You can end up drinking too much too, which can be dangerous.

Running Again!

Wow, we might be clones of eachother...if I were 2 years younger...
I too had been anxious to start running again. It had been so long since I had felt good enough to start training for a 5K. My doctor gave me the "Go Ahead" at my 6 week post op. I have taken it slow and started by working my way to walking 3 miles. Now I am going to start training to run the 5K.
The only thing I can complain about is tiredness. But I suppose that is to be expected after nearly 9 months of doing nothing! :)
Good luck redthread!

You know you're wired when...

Like the Energizer Bunny, you keep going.

As for my pacemaker (almost 7 years old) I like to think of it in the terms of the old Timex commercial - takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
