Gun Handling

Hi Everyone, quick question for anyone that may have some feedback to this issue.

 
I was told that with a pacemaker you were not suppose to be shooting rifles/shot guns that have a "big kick" to them. But what about pistols? Is there a pistol out there that is pacer friendly or would any pistol be pacer friendly? Wanting one for home and personal protection.

I am supposed to shoot in a sporting clays event with a customer this November; good to hear that I shouldn't have any concerns.

Sporting clays are soooo much fun! I won't shoot anything with a heartbeat but I love watching those clays explode, lol. My husband is a hunter and is former law enforcement so we have always had guns in the house. I won't have anything in the house I don't know how to handle, so that's how it started. Our local club closed down, the land is now a subdivision, so I haven't done anything but a range in years.

I've been a deputy sheriff since 1988 (just retired in July). We had to qualify with our weapon a couple times a year. I had my ICD implanted in 2003 and have never had a problem shooting my pistol. Hoping to do a little hunting this fall.

I shoot a shotgun trap and skeet. I'm pretty good for a woman as my hubby says. ha ha... Anyway my pacer is on my left and my shotgun is held on my right.
My surgeon joked with me about what side to place my pacemaker when I was in surgery and he stopped laughing when I answered I shoot from the right shoulder. He nearly fainted! ha ha... I'm about 5'2" and was about 115 pounds. he he... Surprised the heck out of him. I don't have any problems shooting. I've never tried a handgun.

ditto what the others said! As long as you don't put the butt of a rifle right up against your pm so that the recoil smacks it directly into your device, you'll be fine. Pistols don't get anywhere near your shoulder, definitely not a problem. I love to target shoot and do sporting clays and I've never had a problem.

As Lenchat said I doubt that any pistol can pose a risk to your pacemaker. Regardless of which hand you shoot with. As for shotguns, like Magster already said, I wouldn't want to put the butt of a shot gun up against my pacemaker, not even a small one like a 410, but shooting from the side opposite the PM should not be a problem. With all that said, since your doctor knows best if there is anything unusual about your implant that could make shooting a gun a hazard to the PM, you need to ask him and hope that he is not a card carrying member of some anti-gun club.

Frankly, I doubt that shot gun shot from the PM side would hurt the PM (they are tough) but it could put the leads at risk and it most likely will hurt you as there would be not much fleshy padding between the gun butt and the PM.
