an update

Went in for my every 3 month check. I expressed great concern to my doctor that I feel like something is going on outside of my pacemaker as I am so activity intolerant that I cant even explain it. We did an echo of which I have not gotten the results back yet. We debated and debated about putting the rate response back on. I tired it when I first got my pacer a year ago but found that it was pacing me inappropriately and so we turned it off. We decided to give it a try again as when I was doing mode switch (which previously was anytime my heart was over 135 as I have a very low high rate set) it was dropping my heart rate to 70 which when you are trying to exert yourself is no one near sufficient. So we increased my high rate back up to 135 again so I mode switch at 145 but at least with rate response on it will mode switch to a rate response mode so hopefully wont dump me down to 70 but at least a bit more appropriate rate. This morning on my way to work I was driving my sporty little sports car. Our town is KNOWN for HORRIBLE bumpy roads. I was thinking wow it feels like I have butterflys in my chest. I felt my heart rate and it was about 120 or so. I laughed, because my guess is that it was sensing the bouncing of my little car and thinking I was exercising so it raised my rate. LOL I think it might be a LITTLE too sensitive!! Oh well, I am going to give it some time and see what happens. I want to see if I can get used to this before we go adjusting some more. I am hoping that my echo will give us some answers. And maybe with a little luck I will be able to tolerate the rate response and that will help as well. Will give it a good try at least. I do have to give them a call though because one time when we were messing with my settings the medtronic rep turned one of the sensor modes off and he told me to be sure to remind them if I did go back to rate response as it would effect how it calculates if i need a higher rate.. and go figure I forgot. I'll give them a call next week. Other than that, I felt very frustrated that I could not make my EP understand how aweful I feel if I go to exert myself, even with very minimal exertion. Sometimes I wish they could walk in our shoes for just a day and then they would get it. Hope everyone is doing well, especially my Pacer Chicks!!

My EP doctor sort of gave me a funny look, but I DEMANDED to him that if my symptoms did not improve that I wanted a treadmill with my medtronic rep. I am quite familiar with one rep as he has made many many adjustments for me that the EP couldnt quite figure out. Even he recommended it(the rep). So I will definitely be "requesting" it (in a polite yet demanding way)!! Every day that I have driven to work I have had the fast rate while driving. I find it kind of comical actually, just goes to show how bad our streets really are!. I would love to take that to our city council and say hey look, this is how bad our streets are.. but I dont think it would do any good! Oh well, at least I can laugh about it.

Get a copy of the report

My Medtronic printout has a bar graph display that shows the distribution of heart rates in the last period. Maybe you could relate them to the street you were traveling on for each peak. Would be funny to show the city council the graph with arrows calling out the streets.

Ask for an ajustment on the treadmill

If you find that you truly need the Rate Response then it needs to be customized to you. The best way is to have it done by the Medtronics rep with a treadmill available. That way he can have you change your exercise rate while he makes adjustments. There are actually quite a few sophisticated adjustments available to RR, but they rarely are used, No one wants to spend the time doing it right.
